You know those small egg shaped figures with all the wide base and narrow tops that tip forth and back when given a light push? The advertising motto was, “ Weebles wobble, but they don’t fall down.” The plaything is balanced by the weighted underside and brings it to a stop. Most people are stressed. We are bouncing about through life, just we don’t have a built-in mechanism that stops us from toppling over. We are bombarded by technology, obsessed with social media overwhelmed by work and our to-do lists. And those stressors affect our well-being. IBS, headaches, hives, insomnia, high blood pressure, anxiety and chronic pain are merely some of the afflictions that may be caused by or exacerbated by stress.
So what can we do for ourselves reduce anxiety and to attain a sense of balance? You will find numerous practices that can help. Some are passive practices, like acupuncture and massage, where you go to someone to get a treatment. Others need guided imagery, like meditation practices, engagement, breath work, yoga and Tai Chi. One practice which is both passive and participatory is Reiki. You learn how to practice on yourself or can receive a Reiki treatment from a practitioner.
Reiki (pronounced RAY KEY) is a Japanese energy healing technique which can be distributed by light touch (or hands over the body) to a completely clothed receiver. There aren’t any medical contraindications or any religious belief connected to the practice. Reiki is safe and supports any clinical treatment. There is strong anecdotal evidence that Reiki treatments help individuals feel calmer, more relaxed and have less pain. It’s also a religious practice. Practicing self- Reiki, along with the contemplation techniques taught in the course, teaches themselves to calm and let go of anger and worry, bringing balance to body, mind and spirit. When we make an effort to care for ourselves, we tend to be more available to look after others.
Even a quarter hour of Reiki may be beneficial. Receivers take pleasure in the warmth of Reiki touch and get treatments comforting and soothing. Benefits might be experienced in a single session, so added advantages are seen over time but Reiki treatments have a cumulative effect. One patient in the hospital, who afterwards came for treatments as an outpatient, was able enough to manage daily stressors, reported that after four visits, she was sleeping better and was using less pain drug.
