General Surgeon

The DRHC is a modern 41 bed facility with 29 acute care, 10 long term care and 2 Labour/Delivery/Recovery rooms. We have a GP with a third year in Obstetrics performing the majority of C-Section work and one of our ER physicians will be receiving training to provide this service. A neighboring hospital one hour away has agreed to provide coverage and serve as a referral site for emergency coverage in the event appropriate staff are not available. The DRHC offers 24/7 lab/DI/CT/Emerg services to round out the facility features and we have 10 GP’s and two full time ER physicians here.

We currently have one General Surgeon working in the community, and a visiting specialist who performs scopes on a monthly basis. The General Surgery position is salaried and essentially provides remuneration in the area of $500,000/annum including call. The call requirements here for you would be fairly minimal; we have a regional Surgeon Network that shares call duties to ensure you would have a work / life balance. They provide 60% of the call and the Surgeon in Dryden would provide the remainder. Last year in total the General Surgeon was required to come in for 12 procedures; there are consults with the Emergency Department throughout the year that would be part of the call schedule  but staff use good judgement and all on site resources before accessing the General Surgeon for a medical opinion.

Three GP/A’s provide the anesthesia work and conduct pre-op consults to ensure patients are appropriate for surgical procedures. We do ventilate patients if needed but as we don’t have a full ICU per se complicated/critical patients are transported to the larger tertiary care centres in Thunder Bay and Winnipeg.

Endoscopy, laparoscopy (minimally invasive), bowel surgery/re-sections, hernia repair-open and laparoscopic, appendectomies (open/lap), cholecystectomies, insertion of PEG tubes, insertion of central lines-portacath, tubule legations, C-Sections, mastectomies and lumpectomies, amputations, panniculectomy, excisions of nevi and ganglions make up the bulk of the O.R. work. You set your clinic hours and O.R. time as you wish in partnership with the O.R. Supervisor. Overhead is runs close to 10%.

Visiting specialty clinics provide opportunities for surgical assist in Orthopaedics, ENT, Obs/Gyne, Plastics, Rheumatology and the Regional Hip and Knee Replacement Program.

Dryden is a family orientated community of 8500 serving a regional population of 16,000; there is lots to do if you are a fan of the outdoors. Year round over 200 service groups and clubs make for a diverse community with modern amenities.

If you have any further questions or would like to arrange a teleconference to speak further about Dryden as a possible place to work we’d love to chat.
